Acclaimed artist Hamish Fulton marked 40 years as a 'walking artist' with a spectacular return to Penzance. On 19th and 20th October 2013 over 300 walkers gathered in Penzance to create two new art works by the internationally acclaimed artist Hamish Fulton, to mark the 40th anniversary of his commitment to the act of walking.
The first walk took place on Penzance’s promenade and involved Hamish and over 100 local collaborators repeatedly walking the width of the promenade, towards and then away from the sea for 60 minutes. For the second walk Hamish chose the beach between Penzance and Marazion at low tide as the location. This piece took the form of a ‘slow walk’ with the 200 participants being divided into two columns that very slowly crossed, over the course of an hour.

Hamish Fulton Plymouth Group Walk, Saturday 6 December 2014
Born in the ambience of the Landscape, Hamish Fulton is one of an elite group of artists – alongside fellow ‘Walk On’ artist, Richard Long – to explore new forms of art in the late 1960s, landscape art. For those not familiar with Fulton’s work he employs the candid essence within the experience of the landscape through investigating simply the element of walking, capturing this through photographic components. Fulton’s practice, inspired by environments and cultures, sees him construct a series of short walks that forces the participants and audience to think about the viewership of life rather than the object and its composition.
